The Queen of Katwe Book Review #QueenofKatwe

I was sent a book copy for feature from BuzzPlant

The Queen of Katwe
by: Tim Crothers
What is a story of hope and inspiration from one girl in the poverty of Uganda, is a story that I am inviting my son at only 8 years old to experience her journey with me. I received a copy of the book, Queen of Katwe: One Girl’s Triumphant Path to Becoming a Chess Champion and we have begun reading it together. I wanted to read it with him so that we can celebrate reading this book together by seeing the movie created from this book and true story, Disney’s Queen of Katwe opening in theaters September 2016.

Her name is Phiona Mutesi and she lost her father at a young age and lives-at times on the streets-with her mother and siblings. In a daily life most of us cannot fathom, she is not well encouraged to feel she can ever rise above the poverty of Uganda. Unless fate would end up having it, she is to stay as all women do and be a producer of babies. That’s the life of a Ungandan women and from day to day it is to find food and just survive. Then one day she sneaks away, following her brother to a church. It is there she meets War Refugee turned Missionary, Robert Katende. In his Sports Outreach program she found her god-given gift. Chess.

It is her gift that allowed her to leave the slums of Uganda and travel and this gift that brought her family income and so much hope for many kids in that area. The book makes you humble and it inspires. The movie I know will be just as great and cannot wait to finish this story off with a trip to the theaters and support Phiona and the children in Uganda with prayer and belief.

Non-Fiction Children’s Book: Indian Boyhood: The True Story of a Sioux Upbringing

I was sent a sample for feature

Non Fiction Children's Book
by Charles Eastman “Ohiyesa” (1858-1939)
Adapted for today’s youth by Michael Oren Fitzgerald
I have done numerous children’s book reviews here on Parenting Healthy and every once in a while a story comes along that really captivates and offers such a great history. This story originated by Charles Eastman (aka Ohiyesa) is an incredible true story about his Sioux upbringing.
In a tale that appears to be an adventure with horse riding, playing in the woods and hunting is actually an adaption from the true story of Charles ‘Ohiyesa’ Eastman’s life where he was orphaned at a young age, forced off his land by soldiers and spent many days starving. This was his Santee Dakota childhood and he later became a famed American Indian Author who also is the co-founder of Boy Scouts of America, field secretary of the YMCA, an activist and lobbyist for the Sioux tribal nation. Charles ‘Ohiyesa Eastman eventually graduated from Dartmouth and presented a special medal at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair for his achievements as an American Indian. Now you know this story is going to be a great story about critical lessons on life and survival of the young.
The story was adapted and is now available in an easier to read format pertaining to today’s youth from ages 4 and up. It has beautiful illustrations and is such a great adventure of a non-fiction story every child should read. Get your copy ordered today available at Amazon

Children’s Book: Lady Lucy’s Quest

I was sent copy for feature

by Karen Gross
I have an 8 year old son with a very active imagination. It was just a few years ago he refused to leave home without his cape and Thor hammer-grocery shopping, even at my sister’s wedding (she let him have it walking down the aisle in suit and tie) because he would say he needs it at all times “….just in case”. It was a game and he did it, not due to any anxiety, but because he was a little ham and loved the attention he’d get when stopped and asked about his ‘costumes’. Kids have wild imaginations and Lady Lucy’s Quest is for all of the children who dream big.
The story is about a young girl who wants to be a night in the Middle Ages. Quest after quest, Lady Lucy must prove her worthiness to join the Knights of the Round Table. But will her unusual and unique solutions to each hurdle and obstacle thrown in her path lead her to success? This delightful book demonstrates the importance of pursuing one’s dreams and is sure to inspire kids that they CAN achieve what might seem to be impossible!

Get your copy on Amazon and start your child on a journey of enjoy the illustrations the Author had done by 2 high schoolers.

Mother & Son: The Respect Effect Book Giveaway

by: Emmerson Eggerichs, Ph.D.

About the Book:

A new book from W Publishing Group/HarperCollins asks you to consider the all–important
mother/son relationship in a new way: respect, as in the mother should respect the son.

Dr. Emerson Eggerichs, author of Love and Respect – a landmark book that transformed millions of marital relationships – is launching his latest book, Mother & Son: The Respect Effect.

In Mother & Son, Dr. Eggerichs proposes that while showing love is important to a son, showing him respect is key to his heart, and what will transform the mother/son relationship. Of course, to a lot of people, that will sound backwards – shouldn’t it start with the son respecting the mother??

Since the importance of the mother/son relationship crosses all age/race/religion barriers, this is a topic applicable to all – regardless if they agree or disagree with Dr. Eggerichs’ method.
